If you are in the gas control industry or work with gas distribution systems, you may have come across the terms "Outlet Point" and "Point of Use". And you might have wondered, or are beginning to as you are reading this, what really is the difference between these two terms?
Believe us, as an expert in the gas control business for more than 50 years, we, at GCE Speciality, have had this question pop up far too many times from our customers, stakeholders, and other curious minds.
So, here is the short answer: they are basically the same thing. Both terms refer to the last stage of the central gas supply system, where the gas is available for the end user to be used in various settings.
Read along for a longer explanation.

What is an Outlet Point in Gas Control?

An Outlet Point is where the gas exits the distribution system and is ready to be used for its intended purpose. Typically, you will find the outlet point mounted on a wall, conveniently positioned so that a gas control device can be easily connected whenever gas is needed. This term is commonly used across different regions and industries to describe the endpoint in a gas distribution network.

What is a Point of Use (PoU) in Gas Control?

A Point of Use (PoU), on the other hand, is essentially the same as an Outlet Point. It describes the exact spot where gas is accessed and utilised. The term "Point of Use" tends to be the preferred terminology in certain regions and companies, including GCE Speciality.

So, Why the Different Terms?

Well, "Outlet Point" and "Point of Use" can vary based on regional standards, industry practices, or even due to historical usage. Despite these differences in naming, both terms describe the same functionality within a gas distribution system – where the gas is delivered and used.
At GCE Speciality, we use the term "Point of Use" to maintain consistency in our communication and documentation.
