Gasarc Supports Durham University's Standardization and Gas Distribution Strategy

The challenge

Durham University faced significant operational challenges due to non-standardised gas regulators and manifolds sourced from a wide range of manufacturers. This inconsistency led to difficulties in sourcing replacement parts and maintaining systems, creating inefficiencies and potential delays. Additionally, the presence of compressed gas cylinders inside buildings raised concerns around manual handling and fire risk. To address these issues, the university developed a comprehensive strategy to relocate cylinders to a central external store, piping gas safely to points of use.

Objectives & goals

The university's key objectives for this project were to:

Standardise gas control systems across the campus to streamline maintenance and improve operational efficiency.
Enhance safety by reducing manual handling risks and mitigating fire hazards through centralised gas storage.
Select a supplier that met strict quality and cost criteria to support the long-term needs of the university's labs.
Provide high-quality, reliable gas control systems that meet the evolving needs of laboratory environments.

Our process

Following a competitive tender process, Gasarc products were selected due to their quality, availability, and extensive product range. Working closely with the university and third-party collaborators involved in the design and specification of gas distribution systems, our team ensured that all products were correctly specified for their intended use. The installation now serves approximately 236 lab systems, handling a wide variety of gases, including nitrogen, argon, helium, hydrogen, and speciality mixtures.
